At the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships in Martinique, the St. Kitts and Nevis team delivered an encouraging and competitive performance against some of the region’s strongest age-group swimmers. Widely regarded as one of the fastest and most competitive age-group meets in the Caribbean, CARIFTA once again provided a high-level platform for the team to demonstrate growth, determination, and progress.
Skyla Connor produced one of the standout performances of the championships. Competing in 10 events, she achieved an impressive 9 personal bests and set 7 national records, an exceptional accomplishment that speaks volumes about her training, commitment, and determination. Her 200m IM (Individual Medley) was a particularly notable swim, highlighting her continued development in technique, endurance, and race execution. Building on her status as a leading swimmer for St. Kitts and Nevis, Skyla demonstrated both consistency and the ability to perform at a high level on the regional stage.
A key contributor to her success has been her preparation in the United States, where she has benefited from a more competitive training environment, structured coaching, and increased exposure to high-level competition. This experience was evident in her composure and confidence throughout the meet, as she executed her races with maturity and purpose. Beyond her individual achievements, her performances have raised the overall standard of the team and continue to inspire belief that St. Kitts and Nevis swimmers can compete strongly at CARIFTA and beyond.
In open water, Austin Williams showed tremendous courage and resilience in the 5K championship event. Competing in his first open water race abroad, and over the longest distance he has attempted, Austin approached the challenge with determination and bravery. His preparation included consistent ocean training and a strong performance at the recent Nevis to St. Kitts cross-channel swim, where he placed second in the 14–19 age group, demonstrating both readiness and competitive ability in open water conditions. Despite a committed effort, he was unfortunately forced to withdraw on the final lap due to physical discomfort. Nevertheless, his willingness to step into the unknown and push his limits reflects his character and dedication to the sport.
The team’s overall performance reflects the continued development of swimming in St. Kitts and Nevis. We extend sincere thank you to all supporters whose encouragement continues to uplift our athletes. As we strive to grow and compete at higher levels, ongoing support through sponsorship, engagement, and community backing remains vital in creating opportunities for our swimmers.
We also express our appreciation to the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee for their continued support, as well as Coach James Weekes for his dedication to the athletes’ development. Together, we continue to build the future of swimming in St. Kitts and Nevis and inspire the next generation.
